Equine Surgery

Our experienced and highly qualified equine vets are equipped to carry out a range of surgical procedures, including castrations, sarcoid removal, and tooth extractions, under standing sedation at your yard or at our partner facility, Lynwood Stud. More complex cases, including colic surgeries, can be referred to a suitable referral centre.

Our equine vet practice provides 24/7 emergency call-outs, which are always covered by our own Avonvale Equine vets. We pride ourselves on excellent customer service and transparency, so we are happy to produce cost estimates on request and our practice team is always here to help with any queries. We process insurance claim forms free of charge for our clients, and we will always strive to keep you updated.

Horse Castrations

Castration is an important part of caring for your colt, and it is usually performed to make the horse easier to manage. As colts grow and reach sexual maturity, they can become increasingly difficult and dangerous to handle. Furthermore, stallions cannot usually be kept alongside mares, geldings, or other stallions due to the risk of injury from fights, or unwanted foals. Many yards cannot accommodate stallions, so it could be harder to find suitable livery for your horse.

Castration can also help to minimise and prevent some health issues.

Most colts are castrated (gelded) between 6 and 24 months of age, as the procedure carries a lower risk at this age, and it can usually be done at your yard, which is less stressful for the horse. Spring or autumn - when we tend to have cool, dry weather - are usually the best times to perform a castration, as the risk of irritation or infection from flies or mud is minimised.

Our experienced equine vets, supported by our qualified equine vet nurses, can carry out routine castrations under sedation and local anesthesia if appropriate, or general anaesthesia if required. Provided the castration is uncomplicated — i.e. the horse is under 3 years old and is not a “rig” — and you have access to a well-lit, flat area, we can usually carry out castrations at your yard.

Our comprehensive horse castration packages include:

  • Sedation
  • Local anesthesia
  • A single dose of injectible antibiotic
  • An intravenous dose of phenylbutazone (bute pain medication)
  • Standing surgical castration

Equine Sarcoid Removal

Sarcoids account for 40% of all equine cancers. There are various sarcoid treatments available, depending on the nature of the sarcoid. It is important to have any sarcoids examined by your equine vet, so they can be treated or monitored as required. Left untreated, some sarcoids can spread and grow to the point where they seriously affect the horse’s welfare.

Surgical sarcoid removal options can include surgical excision, laser surgery, and cryosurgery. Laser sarcoid removal can often be done under standing sedation and local anaesthetic, either at your yard or at our partner facility, Lynwood Stud.

If your horse has sarcoids, call our independent equine vet practice on 01295 670 501 to discuss your horse’s needs and book an appointment with one of our experienced and highly qualified equine vets.

Equine Tooth Extractions

Routine dental check-ups ensure any dental problems can be identified and treated before they become more serious. Sometimes, however, tooth extractions are needed. Our highly qualified equine dental vets can perform extractions at your yard, or at our partner facility if necessary.

We offer routine and emergency equine dental services, led by our highly qualified equine vets. By choosing us as your independent equine vet practice, your horse can have their routine dental examinations carried out by an equine vet, who can also carry out more advanced procedures, including tooth extractions, if required.
