It is surprising how well horses, ponies and especially donkeys can cope with dental issues. A significant number of equine dental issues often go unnoticed as a result, which makes regular dental checkups highly recommended. Regular dental checkups help us to identify issues early before they progress and can get out of hand.
We usually recommend that all horses and donkeys have a dental examination performed every 12 months unless they are under 5 years old or over 15 years old. In these cases, they should have a dental examination every 6 months.
There are some circumstances where this interval may need to be reduced to 3 months. We provide a reminder service to aid you in keeping your horse’s dental care on track.

We complete most routine dental work at your yard, within the calmer environment of your horse’s own stable. By examining and treating horses’ teeth in a familiar environment, we are able to minimise the stress associated with dental treatments for all involved. Our equine dental vets may recommend sedation and a padded headrest to ensure the safety and comfort of you and your horse. This also allows our vets to complete an equine dental check-up to the highest possible standard and then recommend the appropriate course of treatment.
Horses that have dental problems can display a wide range of symptoms, some of which may not clearly indicate that an equine dental problem/issue is behind them.

Poor performance and behavioural problems including reluctance to pick up the contact can also be caused by dental issues.
In every case, we would recommend an equine dental checkup to identify whether a dental/problem or issue is behind this. In the case of poor performance or behavioural problems, we may also recommend that your horse has a poor performance investigation.
